Jenny’s Journal

Moira has been going to The Visual Art Institute after school on Mondays this year. She LOVES going and it has been really great for her to have a calm and relaxing place to be creative. Truth be told, our pediatrician recommended we find an individual activity for Moira to practice in and develop pride in her accomplishments. I’ve had my eye on the VAI from the time we moved to this area so it was a good excuse to take Moira over for a trial lesson those months ago. It seems to be a good fit for her and she really looks forward to going each week. For almost 2 hours each Monday she is extremely focused in a room with other kids her age and they draw quietly the entire time. Two weeks ago they sent out an email asking for volunteers to have a couple of private lessons with the intention of creating pieces to sell at their upcoming fundraiser. Moira spent 3 hours over 2 sessions working with Laura Paustenbaugh and this was the result!

Not too long ago, for bedtime reading, Moira and Natalie asked me to read aloud their journals (…!). One page, dated “October 29, 2009″ simply said “Art class rocks!”

The fundraiser has an “Underwater” theme and all the classes have been adding a creature of their own choice to the canvas mural.
